Habitat

 

It is found in warm moist climatic conditions and is generally found in tropical region where sun rays fall directly, it is also commonly seen in areas where rains are in excess. It is found every where in India especially middle and south India.

Morphology

 

It is an annual small plant that attains a maximum height of 1 to 5 feet. Leaves are pinnate and are about 10 cm in length. Leaflets are in three pairs, are opposite, ovate, oblong and oblique at base. Flowers are or yellow color and are bearded in the axel of the leaves. It has five petals and is of about half inch in diameter. Pod is thin and is about 6 to 12 inch in length and is obliquely separated. Seeds are of brown color and is rhombohedral it is 30 to 50 in number. The plant flowers in rainy season and fruits in winter season.

Chemical Constituents

 

Seeds contain rhein, aloe-emodin and chrysophanol. It also contains nearly 7 % resins. Leaves contain cathatrine like substance. There have been also certain minerals like calcium, iron, and phosphorus. There has been presence of 1, 3, 5-trihydroxy-6-7-dimethoxy-2-methylanthroquinone and β-sitosterol in the roots. Naptho-α-pyrone-toralactune, chrysophanol, physcion, emodin, rubrofusarin, chrysophonic acid-9-anthrone are present in seeds. Leaves contain Emodin, tricontan-1-0, stigmasterol, beta-sitosteral-beta-D-glucoside, freindlen, palmitic, stearic, succinic and d-tartaric acids uridine, quercitrin and isoquercitrin.

Pharmacology

 

It is kapha and vata dosha suppressant. It acts in skin ailment. It also acts as nerve tonic. It is also as curing the infection occurring in the body and is given in worm infestation. It is also acts as liver stimulant. It also acts as mild laxative. It also acts as heart tonic. It acts on cholesterol thus maintaining the normal level of cholesterol.

According to ayurveda it contains

  • Gunna (properties) - laghu (light) and ruksh (rough)
  • Rasa (taste) - katu (pungent)
  • Virya (potency) - ushana (hot)

Uses

 
  • Paste - it is used in application on the skin ailments. It is very effective in getting rid of chronic of the diseases. It has also proven its worth in piles or hemorrhoids; it helps in relieving pain caused on the excretion.
  • Powder- its powder is often used as laxative agent and also acts in cases like that of indigestion. It is also helpful in toning up of the heart muscles. It also purifies the blood.
  • Juice- its juice extracted out from its leaves is given in conditions like skin ailments, rashes and allergies. It is also used as antidotes in various poisoning.
  • Decoction- it is very widely used as an anti-obesity agent.
