Habitat

 

It is native of tropical climatic area and is present all over Asia. It is also present in the western tropical region of America. It grows freely all over India.

Morphology

 

It is a medium sized deciduous tree that reaches the height of about 25 to 30 feet. The bark is of reddish brown in color. Leaves are alternate, pinnate, 1 to 1.5 feet long and possess pairs of four to eight ovate leaflets about 7 to 15 centimeter long and nearly 2.5 to 3 centimeter broad. This entire petiole is about 3 to 7 millimeter long. It bears yellow colored flowers. That droops down depending upon the length of the racemes. The fruit beared by the amaltas tree is pendulous, cylindrical, brown and septate having a length of 25 to 45 centimeters and possess a diameter of 1 to 3 centimeters. It has within it about 30 to 100 seeds. Seeds are lenticular with red-brownish texture. Tree sheds its leaves in March and April. Fruits arise by rainy season.

Chemical Constituents

 

Amaltas seed contains 24 % proteins, 51 % carbohydrates and about 4.5 % fats. Flowers contain various organic substances like ceryl alcohol, kaempferol, rhein and bianthroquinone glycoside. Leaves possess organics like rhein, rheinglucoside and sennoside. The fruit pulp contains anthraquinone, glucose 60%, alkoloids, gkutin, pectin, calcium, oxalates, certain acids and water. Stem bark contains lupeol, beta sitosterol and hexacosanol. It also contains tannins which are about 10 to 20 %. Besides all these the root bark contains flovefin and anthraquinone. Leaves and flowers have glycosides.

Pharmacology

 

It has a good effect on the digestive tract of the body and works and the laxative. It helps in evacuation of toxins that gets accumulated in the body through anal canal. It has he properties by which it acts as anti inflammatory and also relieves from pain. It also purifies blood and removes the toxicity from the blood. It also works as diuretic. It has a good effect on skin related ailments and also suppresses burning sensation. Due to right balance of fats, carbohydrates and proteins it is very much effective in providing strength to the body.

  • Gunn (properties) - guru (heavy), mridu (soft), snigdh (slimy)
  • Rasa (taste) - madhur (sweet)
  • Virya (potency)- sheet (cold)

Uses

 
  • Local application- it is very effective in healing wounds, tumors, arthritic affected joint, pains when pulp of the fruit is applied on the joint.. Gargling with the decoction helps in relieving from mouth related disorders and throat infection. Application of the paste of leaves is very effective in treating.
  • Decoction- it is very effective treating constipation as it acts as mild laxative. It also helps in indigestion. It is effective in suppressing pain and reduces inflammation.
  • Paste of pulp and flower – it is good treating respiratory tract disease, cough and asthmatic attacks as it soothes the tract. It also helps in relieving the burning sensation in the body.
  • Powder from bark of the roots- it is consumed to get relief from arthritic condition prevailing in the body. It also acts as diuretic. It is also very effective in treating fever especially black water fever
