Morphology

 

A prostrate or creeping, juicy, succulent, glabrous annual herb rooting at the nodes with numerous ascending branches; leaves. simple, opposite, decussate, sessile, obovate-oblong or spatulate, entire, fleshy, obscurely veined, punctate: flowers pale blue or whitish, axillary, solitary, on long slender pedicles; fruits ovoid, acute, 2-celled, 2-valvcd capsules, tipped with style base; seeds minute, numerous.

Chemical Constituents

 
It contains hydocotyline, asiaticoside, valetine, bitter substances, pectic acid, sterol, fatty acids, tannins, volatile oils and ascorbic acid. It also possess thancunisidea, thancunic acid and various glycosides. Besides this it also has asiatica acid, bhrmaoside, bhramic acid, bhrominoside, isobhramic acid, betulic acid and stigmasterol.

Pharmacology

 

It is kapha and pitta suppressant. It is very effective in skin related ailments and also in fairing the skin texture. It is considered the best brain tonic and is very widely given in improving memory and concentration. It is also given in heart related ailments and high blood pressure. It increases the appetite. It is beneficial in acidity and also in epitasis. It helps in expelling out the extra mucus accumulating in the respiratory tract. It is also effective in urine related problems. It also relives from fever.

  • Gunna (properties) – laghu (light)
  • Rasa (taste) – tickta (bitter)
  • Virya (potency) – sheet (cold)
  • Prabhav (action) – brain tonic

It is useful in vitiated conditions of kapha and vata, biliousness, neuralgia, inflammations, epilepsy, insanity, amentia, tumors, ulcers, splenomegaly, ascites, dyspepsia, flatulence, constipation, asthma, bronchitis, skin diseases, leprosy, leucoderma, erysipelas, syphilis, hoarseness, strangury, elephantiasis, dysmenorrhea, sterility
