Morphology

 

A herb with leafy stem upto 90-100 cm in height, leaves oblong-lanceolate, bright green, glabrous on both surfaces; flowers white in globose shortly peduncled spikes, bracts reddish brown, lip ovate-cuneate, emarginate, yellowish white, filaments very short, anther crest small, truncate, entire; fruits reddish brown, densely echinate globose capsules; seeds many, held together by a viscid sugary pulp.

Chemical Constituents

 

The seeds contain the glycosides. Petunidin, 3.5-diglucoside and leucocyanidin and a new aurone glycoside, subulin, chalcone, cardamojin and a flavanone, alpinetin is also reported.

Pharmacology

 

It is vata and kapha suppressant and pitta aggravator. It is helpful in eradicating the foul odor from mouth. It is also helpful in skin disorders and helps in improving the skin complexion. It is also widely used as pain killer thus relieving from pains in the body. It also stimulates heart for normal functioning. It helps in expelling out the extra amount of mucus present in the respiratory tract. It also acts as diuretic and henceis very usefyl in urine realte disorders. It helps in lowering down the raised body temperatures in case fever. It is also effective in poisoning and other infection

According to ayurveda it contains

  • Gunna (properties) –laghu (small) and ruksh (dry)
  • Rasa (taste) –tickt (bitte) and katu (pungent)
  • Virya (potency) – ushan (hot)
