Morphology

 

A scapigerous foetid perennial herb with underground compound bulbs covered over by outer white thin scales and with simple, smooth, round stem, surrounded at the bottom by tubular leaf sheath; leaves simple, long, flat, linear; flowers small, white in rounded umbels mixed with small bulbils, the entire umbel enclosed -in a teardrop-shaped membranous spathe, flowers usually sterile.

Chemical Constituents

 

The essential oil obtained from the bulbs contains allicin, diallyl disulfide, allyl propyl disulfide and other sulfur compounds.

Pharmacology

 

It is vata and kapha supressant and it is pitta aggravator. It increases that blood supply to the particular area of application. It is has anti inflammatory properties. It reduces pain. It also improves eyesight and also improves reflexes. It helps in proper digestion of food and also helps in stimulating theliver for proper secretions of enzymes. It also stimualates heart and helps in mainating the proper functioning. It helps in expelling out the extra amount of mucus that gets accumulated in the respiratory tract. It is very beneficial in increasing the sperm counts and acts as aphrodisiac. Menstrual disturbances are also being treated by it.

According to ayurveda it contains

  • Gunna (properties) –guru (heavy), tikshan (sharp) and snigdh (slimy)
  • Rasa (taste) – madhur (sweet), lavan (salty), katu (pungent), tickt (bitter) and kashaya (astringent)
  • Virya (potency) – ushan (hot)

Toxicology

 

It has no toxic effect on human body if taken in limited amount. If consumed in larger doses it causes vomiting. It should not be given to pregnant ladies.

It also is a good anti infectious agant and is also helps in curbing microbial infection in the body. It helps in preventimg gagerine. It is also very much helpful in sklin disorders. It helps in regaingthe strength after weakness and debility. It is also veryeffective in increasing the sperm counts and resolving menstrual problems.
