Morphology

 

A biennial or perennial herb with aromatic fleshy underground bulb; leaves linear, hollow, cylindric and fleshy; flowers many, white in globular umbels, spathe composed of 2-3 reflexed walls. The underground bulbs which are medicinally used vary in size, colour, shape, firmness, strength of flavour and keeping quality.

Chemical Constituents

 

It contains essential amino acid compostion of arginine, histidine, lysine, tryptophan, phenylalanine, methionine, threonine, leucine and isoleucine. The bulbs on steam distillation yield an essential oil known as ONION OIL. The bulbs contain several phenolic acids, viz. protocatechuic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, vanillic acid, caffeic acid, and o-and p-coumaric acids. Citric, mialic, abietic and oxalic acids are also present. It also conatins several oligo-saccharides.

Pharmacology

 

It is vata and kapha suoressant and pitta aggravator. It is widely used in suppressing pain and reducing the inflammation. It also helps in scrapping the wounds and also to reduce the extra mass. It is a good digestive tonic and helps in digestion. It improves teate in the mouth. It also stimukates liver for proper functioning and improves secretions of the enzymes. It helps in clearing the respiratory tract by xpelling out the extra amount of mucus. It is also helpful in stopping the hemorrhage that occurs in the body.

According to ayurveda it contains

  • Gunna (properties) –guru (heavy), tikshan (sharp) and snigdh (slimy)
  • Rasa (taste) – madhur (sweet) and katu (pungent)
  • Virya (potency) – ushan (hot)

It has no toxic effect on human body if taken in limited amount. If consumed in larger doses it causes vomiting.

Uses

 

Paste – Paste is used in the applying on the pains caused by compression of nerves, rheaumatoid arthtritis. It is also used in suppressing the pain caused by injuries. It is also consumed orally to get relievd from pains and also from nervine compression. It is widely used in treating convulsions and hysteria ceses. It is also used in normalizing the appetite and also in cases of conatipation, piles and rectal problems. It helps in expelling out the mucus that gets deposisted in the respiratory tract. It is also helpful in increasing the sperm count and and related problems. It helps in resolving the urine related problems. It is very effective in treating the skin related problems and settles the itching happening in the body. It also curbs the infections occurring in the body.
