Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson's disease is a genre of movement disorders that wrecks havoc with the central nervous system of the human body. It is termed as a degenerative ailment of the brain that results in the impairment of a person’s speech and basic motor skills. This malady has got its name from James Parkinson, an English physician who wrote on length about the disease. As a matter of fact, this disease mostly affects people over 60 years of age, though some victims of the disease have been found to be in their 40s.

What Causes Parkinson's Disease

This disease is mainly caused by the diminishing of brain cells that generate a vital neurotransmitter called dopamine. This chemical transmits signals between the brain neurons. Human beings can move and behave in a coordinated way because of this chemical. If four fifths of the cells are lost in a person’s body, the symptoms of this disease start appearing.

Parkinson's Disease Symptoms

Parkinson's disease attacks the regions of the human brain that regulates body movements. Therefore, a person suffering from this disease gradually loses the capability to perform commonplace and mundane activities like walking, eating, swallowing and even writing. The progression of the ailment may vary from one person to another.

The most prevalent symptoms of the disease are tremors in the limb of the victim. In some instances the tremors may not be perceptible. The muscle tone of the patients of this disease may become stiff and rigid. Walking and moving are the areas where the victims may face the most of the difficulties. The way of walking of these people are characterized by small steps and they can hardly lift the feet from the ground. If they encounter trivial obstacle on their way they can trip over.

Apart from the difficulties faced in movement and walking the victims of the menace also suffer from difficulties is eating and talking. The speech pattern of the victims of this disorder may become cluttered and monotonic. Besides affecting the physical activities to a great extent, this disorder also leads to complex mood swings in the affected people.

Many patients suffer from varying degrees of depression. Some of the victims can develop dementia. Their memory and co ordination capabilities decrease considerably with time. The sleep pattern of the patients of the disease can be affected with some people developing moderate insomnia.

Parkinson's Disease Treatment

As of now, there is no specific cure for this progressive neurological disease. The doctors stress on treating the symptoms and diminishing their effects. If the therapies begin at the early stages of the disease the patient can cope better. A typical medicine named levodopa is administered to replenish the loss of dopamine in the human brain.

Nevertheless, this chemical can have some side effects on the patients in the long run. That is why the doctors prefer using other drugs instead of levodopa that increases the activities of dopamine. But these medications also have side effects. Patients who are in the advanced stage of Parkinson's disease are given a medicine named apomorphine.

Apart from the aforesaid medications the patients are also given some specialized therapies. These are meant for aiding the movement and speech capabilities. Some patients suffering from Parkinson's disease are made to undergo a special form of surgery called deep brain stimulation.

Even though this surgery can prove to be effective in reducing the symptoms of the disorder, it can not be performed in treating each and every patient having the ailment. For improvements in speech delivery, speech therapy can be given to the victims. Similarly the application of Psychotherapy helps in diminishing the effects of the ailment to some extent.

Apart from giving the possible medication and therapies to the patients, the family members need to deal with them with care and compassion. The diet of the patients should be monitored to see if they are getting the adequate nutrients or not.
