Multiple sclerosis generally refers to a certain neurological problem which affects the nervous system. In multiple sclerosis messages cannot be transferred from the central nervous system to other parts of the body. There is no specific treatment for this problem and one can only rely on temporary relief.

People can suffer from physical and mental disabilities and this disease generally affects the women and the young adults. MS or multiple sclerosis hampers the immunity system and develop an “autoimmune response”. This result in inflammation and the covers that protect the nerves are destroyed. One can also see plaques forming in the central nervous system.

Causes of Multiple Sclerosis

Amongst the possible causes of MS viral infection and the presence of certain genes in the body of the individual are the most noted ones. Many are of the opinion that multiple sclerosis depend on a number of factors which include both environmental and genetic problems. It is noticed that the disease mainly occurs amongst those who live far away from the equator.

As they are less exposed to sunlight they suffer from Vitamin D deficiency which in turn can result to multiple sclerosis. Facts especially a study published from Harvard School of Public Health support this theory. All those children without siblings are prone to this disease. If there is an imbalance in Th1 which fights infection and Th2 which causes allergic eruptions the body loses immunity and may turn to multiple sclerosis. Even chronic infections can lead to this disease.

Multiple Sclerosis Symptoms

It is difficult to pinpoint any specific symptoms of the disease as there are various types of multiple sclerosis each with its individual symptoms. As per case studies only one person out of five are likely to have a benign multiple sclerosis which does not cause any permanent damage and the patient suffers from mild attacks. However 15% suffer from disease which worsens day by day.

People suffering from this disease can suffer from dysfunctionality of nerves and there can be inflammation in the optic nerves. People who have blurred or double vision, are suffering from bouts of tiredness, experiencing dizziness or fatigue or are suffering from temporary blindness are likely to suffer from this disease.

Other symptoms include a sensation of tingling or a numb feel in any specific region of the body, incontinence, impairment, feel of distortion or people suffering from spasticity, pain and weakness in the limb are likely to be victims of this disease. In the later stage of the disease the patients can suffer from speech difficulties and lack of co-ordination and they tend to become depressed.

Types of Multiple Sclerosis

There are different types of multiple sclerosis. Sometimes it might be dormant or can be aggravated by certain factors. There are several types of sub types which actually trace the pattern of the disease. It is important to know about the subtypes which help to determine the treatment.

Relapse-remitting refers to sudden attacks and after the attacks there is no sign of further relapses for a long time. Damages can be done during the attacks which might be cured or can permanently affect the person.

If the damages are cured then it is known as benign MS. The other types include the Secondary Progressive which causes the most damages. In cases of primary progressive older people are most affected and there are lesser chances of remission. Progressive relapsing refers to all those who suffer from a steady decline as soon as MS is detected.

Multiple Sclerosis Treatment

As the causes of this disease remain largely unknown one can only hope for relief from the symptoms. There is no specific treatment for the disease and occupational therapy, physiotherapy, beta-infection and steroids are applied to provide relief from spasms, seizures and the constant throbbing pain.

One can also resort to yoga, acupuncture or massage for a relief. Cannabis is said to have huge potentials which help in reducing muscle spasticity and pain. IV infusions can be taken at a regular period between 1 to 3 months.

Advice

It is impossible to avoid the relapses most of the time. However patients should be more careful during summer and spring when such relapses are common. People suffering from influenza, cold are likely to be prone to this disease. It is best to avoid any kind of physical strain or mental trauma to avoid this disease.
