Miscarriage

Among the most traumatic physical conditions that women are subjected to, Miscarriage deserves a special mention. It is alternatively called spontaneous abortion in medical terms. If the pregnancy of a woman ends abnormally before the unborn baby can live the condition is called miscarriage.

The most prevalent incidents of miscarriage take place before the 24th week. Nevertheless, some children born prematurely nowadays survive due to the advancements made in the spheres of medical science. This is considered the most usual complication arising out of early pregnancy.

Miscarriage Symptoms

The most prominent sign of a miscarriage is profuse bleeding accompanied by severe cramps in the abdominal region of the woman. However, if the miscarriage takes place too early, she might not realize that she was pregnant.

The bleeding may come with clots and in some instances, a tiny embryo covered in a membrane may pass with it. The occurrences of miscarriage are not unusual and on an average, one in every 4 woman may face it after pregnancy.

The doctors usually employ ultrasound tests to detect the possibility and occurrence of miscarriage in a woman. Another important test used in this purpose is the HCG test. Since diabetes can develop during the pregnancy of a woman, the prenatal care must include the monitoring for the symptoms of Diabetes. Generally, miscarriage is quite commonplace and only when a woman suffers from its recurrence, a medical examination is done.

Reasons for Miscarriage

As a matter of fact, there are a number of reasons that lead to miscarriage; the commonest cause is said to be some genetic defect in the foetus or embryo in the woman’s womb. While the genetic defects can lead to miscarriage they can also result in the birth of a baby with severe medical disorders. Most of the chromosomal irregularities leading to miscarriage are unforeseen.

When a pregnant woman carries more than one fetus in her womb, the chances of miscarriage become greater. There are some typical health factors that aggravate the chance of miscarriage in a pregnant woman. One such factor is unabated diabetes. However, women who keep their level of diabetes under check, have lesser risk of suffering miscarriage.

Another factor that often leads to miscarriage in women is the polycystic ovary syndrome. At least 30 to 50 percent of pregnant women who contract PCOS face the incidents of miscarriage in the first three months. Apart from this ailment, some illnesses like chlamydia and rubella and high blood pressure can also lead to miscarriage.

Women who are addicted to smoking face an increased risk of miscarriage. Even if her spouse is a smoker, the woman can suffer from this condition. Women whose husbands are chain smokers face more risk of miscarriage than those whose husbands are casual smokers.

Women suffering from a disease called hypothyroidism are at more risk of suffering miscarriage. The autoimmune diseases that wreck havoc with the immunity system of human body also play a significant part behind the occurrences of miscarriage. Other causes that have been linked with the incidents of miscarriage are physical trauma, consumption of cocaine, drug abuse and exposure to toxic chemicals.

Treatment forMiscarriage

If the bleeding incidents take place during the pregnancy period, one should consult the doctors for a through medical check up. Emergency medical treatment and attention is required if the woman suffers heavy bleeding accompanied with pain. Usually for diagnosing complete abortion, no treatment is needed.

If the woman faces a case of an incomplete abortion, the doctors use some treatment options like misoprostol. It has been found to be highly effective. To complete the miscarriage the doctors also use surgical treatment like vacuum aspiration. It is said to be the best way to diminish the pains related with the incident.

Advice

It needs to be remembered that miscarriage is both physically painful and mentally devastating for a woman. A woman can take long time to recover from the mental trauma associated with the incident. Therefore, such women should be dealt with proper care and compassion by the family members.
