Manic Depression

What Is Manic Depression?

People who are suffering from bipolar disorder are unable to control their behaviour. This ailment is also known as manic depression. They sometimes suffer with mood fluctuations. For smaller reasons they might either become too violent or might even suffer from depression. These extreme nature of behaviour are intermingled with somewhat calm mood.

The real reason behind this disease is still not known. Experts are of the opinion that it might be due to the some environmental and genetic factors. If the person suffers from some kind of stress then the situation might sometime go beyond control. Some incidents of the past or even childhood may also be the reason behind this type of behaviour.

Manic Depression Symptoms

The traits of the bipolar disorder can be seen very often among the children. But the condition tends to aggravate as it is not taken seriously. As these children have not been exposed to treating the disease their case becomes more complicated when they grow into adults.

The risk of developing the disorder becomes more if someone from the family have the similar characteristic. The symptoms of this disease include disturbance of sleep, loss of appetite and interest to certain extent. They do not have any idea as to how to improvise on their behaviour to a certain extent. They are not able to concentrate and are often tempted to commit suicide.

People suffering from bipolar disorder are sometimes described as tornado. Their moods are highly elevated and often hallucinate about the environment. In extreme cases the person has the tendency of becoming psychotic. When under pressure they loose their power of intelligence and also tend to neglect themselves.

The people suffering from this disease have three types of symptoms namely depressive symptoms and manic symptoms and the cycle of those moods. One tends to loose total interest in life, is unable to concentrate in the work, have less or no sexual eagerness, suffers from bouts of depression, loose hope towards life and is unable to concentrate.

Manic Depression Treatment

The bipolar disorder cannot be cured completely. One has to understand the situation and deal with them accordingly. The incidents which trigger off their violent behaviour should be avoided. The people who take care of them will have to handle the situation very carefully.

If the situations are kept under control then the people suffering from this disease can lead a healthy and normal life. The patient should try to monitor his/her mood and thus take the situation totally under control. Help from reliable people can also be taken. If some violent traits are seen then they should be advised total rest thus taking the situation totally under control.

It is not possible to monitor those people who suffer from extreme behavioral changes. For people suffering from acute bipolar disorder antidepressants have to be administered which have to be prescribed by the psychiatrists. The medicine has to be given as per the advice of the doctor and should not be stopped or dose increased without the recommendation of the doctor.

The blood levels have to be checked regularly. The disorder can affect both women and men. The onset of the disorder is noticed during the adolescence stage. The disorder is genetically inherited. This disorder has a bad effect on the life of the patient as well as the lives of the other family members and the care taker.

For people suffering from bipolar disorder care should be taken to keep the mood swings under control. One should continue the treatment regularly. To keep the mood swings under control the patient should see that he/she get proper mount of sleep.

If the schedule is maintained properly then the disorder can be brought under control to a large extent. Right amount of antidepressants should be used so that the disorder is brought totally under control. The functioning of the thyroid should be monitored at a regular interval as this has an effect on the mood and energy level of the patient.
