Hydrocephalus in children denotes a disorder which deals with surplus buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. The CSF or cerebrospinal fluid is a liquid that stays in the spinal cord and the brain. When CSF is accumulated in excess in the brain of a child, it pressurizes the delicate brain tissues. The brain’s ventricular system consists of the 4 ventricles. They are linked by thin passages. As a matter of fact, CSF runs through these ventricles and gets absorbed in blood after touching the spinal cord and brain surface.

CSF is vital for the body as it acts as a shock absorber and also delivers the essential nutrients to brain. Nevertheless, the stability between CSF’s absorption and production is very crucial. When it cannot get absorbed into the blood stream completely its usual flow is disrupted and this causes the syndrome of hydrocephalus. It can impact 1 in every 1000 people. Another thing worth noting is that they also tend to feel sleepy. In their later years, such children develop mental complications. Their head appears unusually large. The diagnosis for Hydrocephalus in children includes CT scan, Ultrasound test, MRI etc.

Types of Hydrocephalus In Children

In the variant of the disease called Non-communicating hydrocephalus, CFS’s flow in the brain is obstructed. This may be due to the structural deformations a child is born with. It can also stem from a brain tumor. Alternatively, any deformity in the blood vessels can lead to its formation.

In the other type called Communicating hydrocephalus, CFS does not get re absorbed and recycled as it is supposed to do. This results in increase of its volume. It can happen in premature children and also in children suffering from syndromes like Arnold-Chiari malformation.

Treatment for Hydrocephalus In Children

The treatment tries to diminish and regulate the pressure given by CFS to the skull in order to prevent further damage to the child’s brain. The doctors usually resort to a surgery where a long tube is inserted to suck out surplus fluid from the brain. In some instances, it may be feasible to get rid of the blockage which hinders the flow of CFS. However, there are other provisions outside surgery.

If left untreated, Hydrocephalus in children can be fatal or can harm the brain seriously. Depending on the time of detection and the underlying cause, most children lead a normal and healthy life after surgery. However, there have been some instances when the children have developed some neurological problems or other serious complications like brain infection after undergoing the surgery.

There is an alternative treatment called third ventriculostomy that has been used in treating some cases of Hydrocephalus. In this method, a small camera which can get to surgical areas is used by the doctors to watch the surface of the ventricle. This is done using the fiber optic technology. Thereafter, a small hole is created in the third ventricle’s floor so that the excess CSF can overcome the blockage and flow to the area of reabsorption.
