Depression

Human mind is very complex in nature and the mood swings sometimes can not be explained by even the most experienced doctors and psychologists. Depression is commonly used to denote a mental state when people feel let down or sad due to some reason or situation. It happens to everybody. But in some cases, this mental problem can assume a strong facet and result in the failure of the affected person to lead a normal life. This is the reason psychologists consider it among the important mental problems.

Symptoms of Depression

Just like any other mental health disorders depression also has some characteristic symptoms that are used to diagnose a person suffering from it. However, it should be noted that not everybody suffering from depression will display the same symptoms. The mood swings caused by depression can be of different levels in different persons and the intensity may vary from time to time.

A person affected by the menace may suffer from reduced sleep and chronic fatigue throughout the day. The levels of anxiety also shoot up in such a person. Some people may display excess emotional nature and pathos. They may also become extremely temperamental and can react aggressively at trivial provocation. Such a person also displays lack of interest in socializing and also fails to concentrate on anything.

This can have far reaching consequences on his personal life and career. Naturally, the decision making power of such a person reduces considerably. Depression also makes a person feel pessimistic about himself and his future. He also suffers from an increasing feeling of loneliness even when he is in the company of other people.

Causes of great Depression

On an average, 7% to 12% of the male population falls prey to depression while in women the rate is as high as 25%. Before their 40s, about 8-17% of any population suffers from Clinical depression. In continents like the USA and Australia major depression haunts a significant part of the population. Overall around 121 million victims of depression exist in the world.

It has been observed that people, who have fallen pray to the menace of depression once in their life, can suffer from more attacks in future. Among the young lot, the number of female patients suffering from depression far outstrips the male victims. However, after the age of 50, this gender imbalance gradually disappears. The world health organization has expressed its view that within 2020, clinical depression will turn out to be the second biggest cause of disability in the world.

Monitoring Your Mood

This is what a person needs to do if he wants to combat depression from the early onset. When a person can detect the presence of the disorder early he is able to fight it better. If a person feels that he is unable to judge his own mood he can ask a close pal to monitor the swings in his temperament.

Family Support and Professional Help

The best thing a person suffering from depression can do is to talk his mind out with a person who has the expertise and experience in the field. There are support groups who cater to the needs of depressed people.

While it is possible to get rid of depression by following self help exercises, some people require professional care and treatment to lead a healthy life again. Cognitive therapy is increasingly used to treat cases of depression by the psychologists these days. Apart from the therapies used to treat cases of depression, there are some antidepressant medicines which the doctors recommend.

Advice

While it is not unusual to feel let down for some reason sometimes, when the feeling of negativity persists for a long period a person should be cautious. To prevent the attack of depression a person can follow some preventive steps. He should refrain from taking food and beverages that act as depressants like alcohol.

It is also important to adhere to a healthy diet. A person has to learn the trick of countering the negative feelings with reassuring and positive thoughts. To get rid of the pessimism a person can also concentrate on something that interests him.
