Romantika or measles is a very common disease, especially seen among children below ten years of age. This is a respiratory disease and is extremely contagious. Another name for romantika is rubeola. The treatment of measles is a natural process. Only some precautions need to be taken. The mortality rate due to romantika is very low.

Definition of Measles (Romantika)

Romantika is a common disease of the respiratory tract. It is characterized by the formation of pink or red pin-like rashes on the body. The rashes appear mostly on the cheeks, but can spread to the chest, back, hands and legs. Along with the skin eruptions, there are also measles symptoms of common cold like a runny nose, watery eyes, etc. A typical case of romantika lasts for five days, but it can last up to two weeks in some cases.

Romantika is a viral disease. It is extremely contagious by the agency of air. Out of the people living in direct contact with a person having romantika, ninety percent will get the disease themselves. Hence, romantika needs careful quarantining and prevention, especially in the first two days of the onset of the disease.

However, romantika is not a fatal disease. Death occurs only in very rare cases, about one in a thousand. Even in such cases, death is not due to romantika itself, but due to complications caused by the disease.

Causes of Measles (Romantika)

Romantika is caused due to the paramyxo virus. The paramyxo virus thrives in air and hence the disease is airborne. The ways in which the romantika virus is transmitted from one person to another are as follows:-

If a person comes in direct physical contact with an affected person, then he or she too has the chance of contracting measles. This chance is greater in the first two days of the onset of measles.

The virus causing romantika can live in the sputum, saliva and phlegm of the affected person. This can be transmitted to another healthy person if the affected person coughs, sneezes or even talks and laughs loudly.

Even if the diseased person is kept in isolation, there is a chance of spreading the disease through the clothes, or simply through the air.

Ayurveda has defined romantika as a disease caused by the vitiation of both the pitta and kapha doshas of the body. Pitta dosha represents fire. Pittadosha is responsible for the proper functioning of the body. Kapha dosha represents both the water and the earth. This dosha is required for the proper coordination of the person with the external environment. Hence, a fluctuation in either the pitta or kapha dosha leads to measles.

Measles Symptoms(Romantika)

Once the paramyxo virus has entered the body of a healthy person, he or she can take from ten to twelve days for the measles symptoms to begin showing. The measles symptoms are quite general and they follow a set pattern in all affected people.

(i) Incubation Period – This is the time lag between the exposure to the virus to the actual culmination of the disease. It lasts from ten to twelve days. It is on the fourteenth day from exposure that the primary rashes begin to appear.

(ii) Prodrome – Prodrome sets in when the incubation period is over. This is characterized by the onset of common cold like symptoms. The person will have a runny nose and watery eyes. Fever begins one to two days later, with the temperature running up to 103 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit. In some cases there can be ocular complications like conjunctivitis.

(iii) Appearance of rash – The rash appears one or two days after the common cold symptoms are shown. The rash appears as pinkish and then darkens progressively. Koplik spots appear, which are pinhead like macropapules. These spots may appear blue in color. The rash begins on the cheeks and then continues to progress downwards, from the trunk to the limbs.

(iv) Disappearance of rash – About three to four days later, the rash begins to fade. The rash goes away in the same order as it appeared. Once the rash is gone, there may or may not be a slight fever.

Complications from Measles (Romantika)

Though romantika is a very simple disease and treats itself almost automatically, it can cause disastrous consequences in the person if left untreated. The following are some of the factors that can make romantika a complicated disease.

(i) Today the most dangerous complication with romantika is if a pregnant woman contracts the paramyxo virus. The virus directly affects the early fetus. It can cause an underweight baby, or the baby can even be stillborn. There is also a danger that the baby may be mentally retarded.

(ii) On the other hand, if the woman contracts measles in the later months of her pregnancy, then the baby will also have measles at birth. Also, the baby will be born with a natural immunization against the disease.

(iii) Diarrhea and pneumonia can occur in people with weak body resistances. Statistically, eight percent of people getting romantika can contract diarrhea, while six percent can contract pneumonia.

(iv) In children who get romantika, there is a fair chance that they can get ear otitis.

(v) One in a thousand romantika patients can develop acute encephalitis. This complication arises five to six days after the beginning of the rash.

Transmission of Measles (Romantika)

Romantika is an extremely communicable disease. It can pass through the air medium from an affected person to a healthy person. The virus can be killed by heat and light; hence there is a greater chance of transmission of romantika in temperate countries than in tropical countries. Another point to be noted is that the romantika virus cannot live in air for more than two hours. It needs a host’s body to survive.

Diet During Measles (Romantika)

A healthy diet ensures that you are well-protected from the paramyxo virus, as well as the side-effects that this disease can cause. Follow the dietary regimen given below:-

(i) Romatika causes a lot of dehydration within the body. Hence the foods must supply for this loss of water. Include lots of fresh fruits in your diet, especially citrus fruits like oranges, grapes, cantaloupes, etc. that contain high water content.

(ii) Vitamin A-rich foods are also to be included in the diet because they build up body resistance against fevers. Carrots are the best source of vitamin A. Papaya is also rich in vitamin A content.

(iii) Foods like parsley quicken the healing process. They make the blisters ripen faster and degenerate.

When the romantika symptoms begin to show up in a person, it is advisable to give him or her all-fruit diet for the first three days, and then gradually begin the normal diet. Fruits have high water content which will supplement the water requirement of the patient.
