First of all, when buying a gift for a teacher, try not to get him or her gift that's too expensive or extravagant. The reason behind this is that a gift that's too costly may make the teacher feel uneasy.
A perfect gift for a teacher would be a book. It's safe to assume, that most teachers enjoy reading in their spare time, as well as for their job. Try to have a good idea of what type of books the teacher prefers, novels or poetry. When giving your teacher a book, it might also be a nice idea to write him or her some words of appreciation in the beginning. A movie would also be a good idea to give for a teacher as a gift, especially if it is one that relates to the subject they teach in class. Besides a book or a movie, you could consider ordering them a subscription to a particular magazine that might interest them or help them in learning new information to share with their students.
Some other possible gifts you could give a teacher, would be a portfolio or briefcase (for them to carry their books and papers in), a pen set, a laser pointer, an object for them to put on their desk (i.e. a desktop globe or calendar), a bouquet of flowers, a plant (for his or her classroom, or for their home), a scarf, a necktie, a purse, a wallet or a picture frame. It would probably be best to avoid giving jewelry as a gift, but a simple watch would be suitable, as long as it's not overly priced or fancy. Remember, you want to show the teacher your appreciation, but you don't want to make them feel uncomfortable.
You could also give a food basket, such as one with an assortment of fruits or a selection of candies. Another good idea for a gift would be tickets to a sports game (if you know the teacher has a favorite team) or tickets to see a theatre production. Make sure you give at least two tickets, so the teacher could bring their spouse or another guest of their choice, to the particular event.
