Aerobic exercise is one that utilizes oxygen as a major fuel to sustain a physical activity for a relatively long period of time. These exercises are of a moderate intensity that aim at increasing your heart rate and help you burn calories. Regular practice of aerobic exercises can lower the risk of developing cardiovascular and respiratory diseases and other health problems.

There are various types of aerobic exercises that you can choose from.

Walking is a low impact exercise and can be performed by people of any age group. You can increase the rate of fat loss by increasing your speed. To gain the maximum benefits you’ll have to walk at a brisk pace to increase the heart rate to a modest level of intensity.

Jogging\Running is very effective in developing cardiovascular endurance. Its benefit over walking is that it leads to greater calorie loss because you can run greater distance in a shorter time span.

Aerobic Dance is a fun way to exercise. It consists of athletic moves and dance steps choreographed around foot-tapping music that keeps your motivation levels high. It is an excellent way to exercise for those who like to escape exercising.

Water Aerobics can be a cool way to exercise during sultry summers. Water has a cushioning effect on vigorous movements, making it a low impact workout.

Swimming is another effective cardio-exercise. Since it is considered a non-weight bearing exercise it scores a point over running. Swimmers can swim for longer duration without the risk of injury, unlike runners. It is also beneficial for over weight, arthritic and injured people.

Stationary cycling\ Bicycling increase muscle endurance and strength, they improve the flexibility of selected muscles of legs and thighs.

Jumping Rope is something are grannies did when they were kids. It in fact is a great aerobic work out if performed at a moderate pace.

In line skating or Rollerblading helps in strengthening the lower back and enhances cardiovascular development.

Kickboxing helps in burning 350-450 calories in a 50-minute session and is therefore very effective for quick weight loss.

Other types of aerobic exercises include soccer, cross-country skiing, basketball, hiking, ice-skating, rowing, singles tennis etc.

You can select any of these that interest you and suit your physical needs and fitness levels.
