STORYLINE:
Jackie (Susan Sarandon), a book editor, shares the custody of her ex-husband Luke (Ed Harris). She has the mid-week custody of her kids, Anna (Jena Malone) and Ben (Liam Aiken ) while Luke has their weekend custody. Luke is seeing Isabel (Julia Roberts). While Jackie is a successful soccer player, Isabel is a high-fashion photographer. She is a career oriented woman who felt her quite wanting in looking after the kids.
In a medical examination Jackie discovers that she has cancer. Luke assures her that Isabel will take adequate care of their kids if something drastic happens to her. But Jackie is worried about her kids anyway. Isabel tries very hard to make kids at home with her but fails miserably. The kids are always rude and harsh to her.
Naturally Jackie, who blames her for the miseries in her married life, gives her a cold treatment. She hates Luke as well, frequently confronting him against Isabel. In spite of her being given a large bungalow, luxury car to travel around, enough maintenance to sustain herself and children quite lavishly and comfortably, Isabel tries her best but the kids Anna and Ben don’t relent. They want their parents to reunite and Isabel out of their lives.
The bond between the two women starts to develop as soon as they find that they are indispensable to each other. Isabel gets fond of Jackie, the mother and Jackie gets fond of Isabel, a modern career-oriented woman.
Isabel secretly fears that on Anna’s wedding day she would want her mother’s presence. Jackie reveals to Isabel that she fears her daughter forgetting her mother by the passage of time.
The movie STEPMOM ends with a happy note when Isabel starts clicking family photograph of Luke, Jackie and the kids. At this moment Jackie feels something missing in the picture frame and invites Isabel to complete the family portrait.
