All the important days and festivals have an origin. These days originated initially as remembrance and continuation of some important tradition related to that particular occasion. Mother’s day also has its origin in these traditions.
Mothers Day Origin in the England
Mothers Day has its roots in the seventeenth century England.
Initially the fourth Sunday in Lent was named and celebrated as “Mothering Sunday”.
In those times in England rural children used to go away to cities to learn some trade or professional training .So their return to their homes was celebrated by their parents especially the mothers. This occasion was later on celebrated as Mothers Sunday and henceforth came into origin.
This became a tradition that the family gathered together to have a mid-Lenten feast.
Mothers were treated as guest of honor. The children gave treats to their mother, prepared cakes and cookies for them and showered them with extra love and care.
They also gave bouquets and gifts to their beloved mothers.
Mothers Day Origin in USA
In the United States of America it was Julia Ward Howe who came with the idea of Mothers Day in 1872.The real objective was to celebrate the peace. But this idea didn’t gain any popularity because the name couldn’t match the objective.
In 1908 ANNA JARVIS made an effort to establish Mothers day as a national celebration. In the Andrews Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia, Anna Jarvis
For the first time paid homage to her mother “Anna Reece Jarvis” and rechristened this day as “MOTHERS DAY”. It was her way to pay tribute to her mother. She devoted
her entire life in trying to get mothers day declared as a national holiday.
As a result the first official mothers day was celebrated on May 10 th, 1908. This
Mother’s day ceremony was attended by around 400 people. Anna Jarvis made everyone wear white carnations-one each by the son and daughter and two by their mother.
Later in 1914 the then president of USA-Woodrow Wilson declared the “Mothers Day” as a national holiday on the second Sunday of May every year.
This is how the Mothers Day Origin came into being.
