The second Sunday of May is very special for all the children in America , because on this day children, of all ages, treat their mothers to something special. It is one of those Mothering Sundays when children, young and old try to show how much they love and appreciate their mothers, in all tangible ways possible.
This mothering Sunday came into being in England to recognize the mothers of their country. In the Eighteenth century many children left their native places to work as domestic help. Though with the gradual availability of jobs in the industry this custom wasn’t followed much since working and living conditions of the people were changing. In early twentieth century finally the second Sunday of the month of May was declared as Mothers Day public holiday.
In the year 1915, Mothers Day was also declared a public holiday in United States as well. A loving daughter by the name of Anna Jarvis made Mothers Day possible in the honor of her late mother Anna Reece Jarvis. In a special ceremony in a church in West Virginia Anna Jarvis gave a lecture in the memory of her mother. On the same Sunday the minister announced Mothers day as national holiday all over the country.
In America on Mother’s Day children traditionally serve breakfast to their mothers on the bed and present them with gifts which they lovingly they prepared with their own tender hands. Mothers are also given red carnations to their mothers. Restaurants all over the cities get houseful due to hordes of diners coming to them. Mothers are pampered like queens and not made to do any household work this day including cooking of food.
As the date of festival of Mother’s Day falls midway between Shrove Tuesday and Good Friday in the middle of Lent, Mothering Sunday is also called Midlend Sunday. Simnel Cake Simnel cake is a special dish prepared only on Mothers Sunday. It is a cakefull of fruit with a layer of almond paste on top. The cake is laced with 11 balls of a confectionary made of almonds, egg white and sugar.
So come on folks lets celebrate MOTHERS SUNDAY.
