 Makar Sankranti is an important festival which celebrated in most of the parts of India with different names. Let us see some popular Makar Sankranti recipes.

Pinnie Recipe

It is a sweet dish and easy to prepare.

Ingredients :

Wheat flour – 250 gms

Sugar – 250 gms

Ghee – 250 gms

Milk – 4 tbsp ( more if needed)

Cardamom Powder – 1 tsp


Heat a heavy bottomed pan and pour ghee into it. Add flour to it and stir fry it till it becomes golden brown. You can identify it by its smell also. Take it out on a plate and let it cool. When it is still warm add sugar and cardamom and mix well. Now sprinkle milk and bind them into fist shaped pinnies.

Til Laddoos

These are the balls made up of roasted sesame and jaggery.

Ingredients :

Sesame Seeds – 4 cups

Water – ½ cup

Powdered Jaggery - ½ Cups

Finely chopped Nariyals – 1 cup (optional)

Method :

Make syrup by boiling jaggery with water. In another pan, dry roast sesame seeds till light brown. Pour coconut in boiling jaggery syrup till it becomes a thick mixture. Now add roasted sesame seeds and mix well. Remove from fire and when still warm, make balls.


 It is a delicious fried snack prepared from wheat dough.


Wheat Flour – 500 gm

Water – 1 ½ cups

Ajwain – ½ tsp

Salt to taste

Oil for kneading – 2 tbsp

Oil for deep frying


 Knead dough by mixing oil, ajwain, salt, flour and water. Make sure dough is hard. Now make a flat big chapatti of whole dough. Cut this into long strips. Deep fry these strips in a deep frying pan. Fry till golden brown and crisp. Drain excess oil on a paper towel. After it gets cool, store it in an airtight jar.

Refined Flour (maida) – 1 ½ cups

Oil for shallow frying

Roasted white sesame seeds- 2 cups

Grated Jaggery – 2 cups

Cardamom Powder – 1 tsp

Nutmeg Powder – ¼ tsp


Knead dough by mixing, oil, salt, flour and water. Cover it with a wet cloth to keep it soft. Mix jaggery and sesame seeds well. Add nutmeg and cardamom to this mixture. Make balls from dough and fill sesame mixture. Seal the balls and put and rolling plate and make little round chapatti. Fry it till it becomes golden brown.
