Janmashtmi Recipes

Janamashtami is a day filled with devotion and celebrations. Fast and feast are the two important features of this festival.

Doodhachi Kheer

Milk – 5 Cups

Long-grained Rice – ½

Cardamom Powder – 1 tsp

Almond Powder – 2 tbsp

Saffron – 2 strands

Condensed Milk – 1 tin

Sugar to taste

Method:

Soak rice for ½ an hour. Boil milk and lower the flame. Pour rice into it and bring a boil to the milk with rice. Simmer this for about 45 minutes until milk become creamy and rice softens. Add condensed milk, sugar, cardamom powder, saffron and almond powder to it. Stir it to mash rice and thicken it.

Singhare Ki Puri

You will need:

Singhare flour - 1 cup

Oil – 1 tbsp

Ajwain Seeds – 2 tsp

Boiled, peeled and mashed Potatoes – ¼ cup

¼ cup coriander leaves

Chopped Green Chilies – 2

Salt to taste

Little water for kneading

Oil for deep frying

Method :

Make soft but tight dough, mixing all the contents except the oil. Keep in mind that, do this just before preparing puris otherwise dough becomes loose very quickly. While kneading, use little water if only needed. Now either make a small puri on palm by applying oil or water or on the rolling plate and then deep fry it until it gets brown and crisp. Drain it on paper towel.

Saboodana Khichadi:

 Saboodana (Sago) – 1 cup

Peeled, finely chopped potato – 1

Peanut – 1 cup

Grated Coconut – ½ cup

Green Chilies – 5

Sugar – ½ tsp

Finely chopped Coriander leaves – 1 small bunch

Rock salt

Cumin seeds – ½ tsp

Ghee – 1 and ½ tbsp

Juice of one lemon

Method:

Wash clean sago and soak in water. It will puff up after absorbing water. Take a pan and heat ghee in it. Put cumin seeds and heat them till brown. Now put green chilies and stir. Add potato and cook till tender. Now ad sago, coconut, coriander leaves, sugar, peanut, lemon juice and rock salt. Cover and cook it for few minutes; stir occasionally to let it cook properly.

Panchamritham:

Fresh Milk – 1 cup

Ghee – 1 tsp

Curd – 1 tbsp

Sugar – 3 tsp

Banana chopped – 1

Tulsi leaves – 5

Method:

Combine all the things together and keep in refrigerator for chilling.
