Gandhi jayanti is the occasion of birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the most revered leader of nation. Mahatama Gandhi is regarded as the father of the nation and is fondly called as “Bapu”. This day is observed in his remembrance in whole India .
Background OF Gandhi Jayanti:
Mahatama Gandhi played very important role in achieving independence for India while India was under the British rule. While working for independence of India , he never took resort of violence; he followed the path of non-violence. He could do so only because of his high thinking, simple living and strong will power.
Actual name of Mahatama Gandhi was Mohandass Karam Chand Gandhi and he was born on October 2, 1869 in Porbunder of Gujrat state of India . He went to United Kingdom to study law and went to South Africa to practice law. Later he left his practice and came to India to fight for freedom of his people.
Celebration of Gandhi Jayanti:
Celebration of Gandhi Jayanti is rather a quiet affair. This day is declared as the national holiday. Most important people of the nation including President and Prime Minister of India, make a visit to Rajghat (Samadhi of Mahatama Gandhi) to pay homage to him.
A prayer meeting is arranged at Rajghat and people of all religions and community take part in it to mark respect to the great leader. In other states also, prayer meetings are hold to remember Mahatama Gandhi and his contribution.
Though schools are closed on that particular day but children are told about the great views of Mahatama Gandhi, his contribution to the nation, his life and his achievements. Children are encouraged to help the poor ones and downtrodden. In many schools Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated by doing odd works like cleaning the public areas, plant a sapling, distribute medicines to the poor people, pledging to educate the poor people.
