Eid-ul-Fitr
Id-ul-Fitr is the most important festival for Muslims and commonly known as Eid. This festival is celebrated all over the world with great devotion, fun and frolic. This festival marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting. This festival is important in terms of its timings and religious significance. Eid is derived from Arabic term “Oud” which means return’ it signifies return of Eid every year.
When is Eid-ul-Fitr Celebrated?
Eid-ul-Fitr is celebrated on the end of month of Ramzan and on the first day of month of Shavval. Ramzan is the ninth month on the Muslim (Hijri) calendar and Shavval is the tenth month. The fast is broken after sighting the new moon of the first day of Shawwal.
Significance of Eid-ul-Fitr:
Meaning of Eid-ul-Fitr is “Festival of Breaking of Fast”. On the day of Eid-ul-Fitr, breaking of fasting of Ramzan period is performed amidst auspicious and festive atmosphere. It is believed that during the holy month of Ramzan, holy Koran was revealed to Prophet Mohammad. This festival revives the spirit of brotherhood, love peace and sharing among people. Special prayers are offered to the Allah on this day.
Celebrations of Eid:
Celebrations of Eid-ul-Fitr are the most eagerly awaited for whole year by all rich or poor, grownups or kids. During the month of Ramzan, people observe day long fasts for each day of that month. Along with fast, regular timely prayers are offered to the Allah.
For this very day markets, shops and homes are cleaned and decorated with all glittering things.
Men wear new, crisp clothes and march to the Idgah (Mosque) for special morning prayers offered for Eid. The view at Idgah is just remarkable with unmatchable organization, discipline and equality of people. This is one thing which can be observed among Muslims all over the world.
Women also pray at home and wear very fine, glittering clothes and jewelry. They prepare all the delicacies of Eid, especially “sewain” (vermicelli, cooked in milk and sugar). Friends and relatives are invited to feast together and people embrace each other to share these joyous moments. Non-Muslims also visit their Muslim friends on this day to add to their happiness. In country like India , these kinds of festivals are of great importance to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood among different communities.
