Easter in Netherlands is the most important festival as is the trend among Christians all over the world. Easter observances and celebrations start with the carnivals which are organised before the fasting period of Lent. Many other countries also organise such pre-lent carnivals. These carnivals are very important part of the Easter celebrations. Preparations of these carnivals start on the 11 th day of the 11 th month of the previous year when the council of 11 meets to discuss about the events and details of the pre-lent carnivals. Carnival is marked by lots of fun and frolics; celebrations are very colourful. Dance, music, masquerade and parades play important role in making this carnival a success and a memorable event. There is a very interesting tradition of the carnivals. In each town where the carnival is held, a person is selected as the prince and he is given the keys of the city.
Palm Sunday or palm Zondag is an important day for children; on this day children scour the farms and lands in their village or town to search for the eggs which are then used for various Easter sports. While moving out for searching the eggs, kids keep with them a decorated stick which is known as the Palmpaas or the Easter Palm. A hoop is attached to this stick. This hoop is covered with boxwood and is adorned with decorative things like colour paper flags, sugar rings, egg shells, oranges, figs, raisins and baked dough figures and many other Easter items.
In the eastern Netherlands, village folks love to arrange the Easter bonfire at some high point like hills. To do this, these people start collecting the wood a week before Easter and try to outdo each other by having the biggest bonfire. Family get together for the Easter meals on the Easter Sundays is another Easter tradition.
