Like all other countries in Europe and America which follow Christianity, Switzerland also has great Easter celebrations. And as every nation has its own custom, rituals and traditions about any festival or Easter, Switzerland also has its one set of Easter customs and traditions. People of Switzerland are more into festivities and celebrations of Easter rather than its religious observances.
As in other regions, eggs, rabbits, chocolates, cakes are associated with Easter in Switzerland also. In the wake of growing commercialization, Easter festivities are getting more of enjoyment than observing the Easter religious customs. Good Friday and Easter Monday are included into the Easter holiday to go for short weekend break.
Around the Easter time, you will get to see colored, decorated eggs, chocolate bunnies, special Easter cake ( Osterfladen) all over in the shops and home also. Kids find it most enjoying during the Easter holidays.
On the Easter Sunday, fun starts with Easter-egg hunt. Kid scour through the house and gardens to find the Easter eggs left by the Easter bunnies and they fill their Easter baskets with these eggs.
On the Easter Monday, a unique egg custom takes place in Zurich which is known as Zwanzgerle. In this game, kids get the adults to break their decorated eggs using 20 cent coin. If the adults are successful, they get the egg and the coin back otherwise adults have to give that coin to the kid. This is really a very interesting and cute Easter game for kids
On the last Thursday of lent, a Biblical passion play is also arranged in few parts of Switzerland in which roman soldiers, horseback trumpeters are shown. On Good Friday, in more a solemn procession on streets in which sculptures of dead Christ and his Mother Mary are carried.
In Romont, ‘Weeping Women” carry scarlet cushions through the streets having symbols of Christ’s passion like nails, crown of thorns placed on his head, handkerchief used by the St. Veronica to wipe Christ’s brow.
