Russia is a huge country with very rich heritage and past. Russia has its own share of traditions, rituals and customs. As all other European countries, Russia is also a nation with majority of Christians living in it. And Easter is one of the important festivals celebrated in Russia but according to its own customs and rituals. Religious observations on the occasion of festival of Easter in Russia are celebrated according to the Eastern Orthodox Church. Besides all the other differences between the customs and rituals of Eastern Orthodox Church and Western Christian (Protestants and Roman Catholics) most significant difference is about the date of celebration of Easter Day. Both the beliefs use the different calendars; while the Western church makes use of the Gregorian calendar and the Eastern Church uses the Julian calendar.
In Russia , all through the Saturday night, Easter Services in the Russian Orthodox Church are held. On the night of Easter Saturday, congregation of devotees start gathering in the church. This is to take part in the Easter vigil which is held to commemorate the buried Jesus.
Another important Easter tradition in Russia is coloring and decorating the Easter eggs. Red is the most important dye as in the other countries and it is so important because it reminds the blood shed by the Jesus for the wellbeing of the humankind. Then there is tradition of cracking of eggs using the nails; this tradition is held to commemorate the death of Christ.
The Sunday of Resurrection or Easter Sunday is known as the Paskha in the Russian language. Easter in Russia is not just about resurrection, it is much more than that. Aster is welcomed by the Russians by baking a special Easter bread called Paskha and decorated colored eggs.
An elaborate Easter dinner is arranged after the Easter services where the whole congregation enjoys together. Besides Paskha, this sumptuous dinner also have traditional Easter cakes called Kulich and also the curd Paskha. People exchange eggs on this occasion.
