There are many Easter traditions which started in Germany. In Germany, Easter is celebrated with great religious fervor. Easter is known as Ostern. During Easter, People greet each other by saying Frohe Ostern which means Happy Easter.
Easter celebrations in Germany begin with covering the cross on Good Friday. Feast for this includes dishes with fish in them. The Easter day starts with mass, from Saturday evening to Sunday morning. On Easter Sunday they observe Family Day. Each member of family gathers for the special Easter lunch. Attraction of this lunch is colored eggs and lamb-shaped cake. Other sweet foods like cakes, cookies and chocolates are also eaten.
One fun tradition of Easter is hiding eggs and cookies in the garden and asking children to hunt them. Another interesting tradition is to arrange an Easter fire. For this, all the old Christmas trees are collected and burnt. This is done to do away all the signs of winters and welcoming spring.
On Holy Thursday or Maundy Thursday, green eggs are used. A passion play is preformed in German Town, Oberammergau on the occasion of Easter. About 1200 villagers perform the story of suffering, crucifixion and death of Jesus.
In Germany, there is tradition to hold Pre-Lent carnival called Fasching. This is held in German city Cologne. In the carnival, people wear giant sized, papier-mâché head. A special type of thick doughnut, Cruller is prepared by Germans before the Lent to consume large quantity of fat.
In some place, Germans take part in long rides or walk to commemorate the walk took by Jesus to death. Children have fun by having bonfire on the night of Easter Saturday. They prepare an egg tree by putting small branch of tree in a vase. Then real eggs are colored, painted and hung on the tree. Chocolate kiss is another game played by kids in Germany
