Easter is very important festival in Scandinavian nation, Denmark. Easter is called Påske in Danish. It is celebrated in traditional manner as decided by Danish Folkekirke. Danish Folkekirke is the national church of Denmark and is the largest Christian church of eth nation. Easter is observed as the significant religious holiday. Festival of Easter is celebrated with colorful traditions which are the part of national heritage of Denmark.
Churches are decorated and people decorate their homes too for the occasion of Easter which is observed to honor the resurrection of Jesus. On the Easter eve, green and yellow colors are used to decorate the home and shops. For that, they use branches with new leaves and daffodils. Eggs are colored and decorated and they are also used for decorative purpose.
Elders gift Easter chocolate eggs to their younger ones. Children write gækkebrev to their relatives and good friends and in turn they get more Easter eggs. It is a unique Danish tradition to write Gækkebrev, which are the teaser letters. These letters are written in verse form like poems or rhymes. These anonymous letters are made more interesting by marking as much number of dots as are the letters in the name of the sender. This way, recipient can guess the name of the sender. Snowdrop can be used to decorate the Gækkebrev. This snowdrop is regarded as the first flower of the year. If the person is not able to guess the name of the sender, he has to give an Easter egg to the sender.
Schools and offices are closed, days before Easter for celebrations; mainly from Skærtorsdag (Maundy Thursday) to Kristi Himmelfartsdag (Ascension Thursday). This is to honor the descent of holy spirits. Danish Easter Lunch is a big feast which is enjoyed in company of family and friends. Main Easter dishes are fish, sliced meat, egg dishes and cheese. Table decoration is specially emphasized.
