Brazil is a largest nation in South America. Brazil is known for its rich culture and heritage. Grand festive celebration is very much part of the daily life of the people there. Easter is also celebrated with great fanfare and devotion. Since 1950, the village of Fazenda in Brazil performs a passion play. It depicts the arrest, trial and crucifixion of Jesus and thousands of onlookers watch this emotional and divine side of Easter.
Rio de Janeiro, the capital of Brazil is renowned world over for holding grand carnivals before Lent. These carnivals means stopping meat eating in the Lent period as people are supposed to abstain from meat in this period. Many people in Brazil spend the whole year in preparation of this carnival as lot have to be done to hold these carnivals; costume are to be prepared, music and dance are practiced. These carnivals are time for merry making, eating, drinking and dancing before the fasting period of Lent.
Apart from Rio de Janeiro, other towns and cities in Brazil also have Easter celebrations during carnival period. Maracatu and Frevo are two well known dances presented by Recife on the Easter.
In Brazil, Holy week starts with blessings of Palm branches. These branches are woven in a delicately special manner. Many patterns like, banners, crosses, letters etc are woven on these palm branches. Streets are decorated with various colored patterns using Easter symbols. Procession walks on these decorated streets. Participants of the procession carry the statues of Mary and the body of the Christ.
On the occasion of Easter, a special food called pacoca is prepared from crushed nuts and other ingredients. This is offered to the visitors. This carnival reappears briefly with Hangover Ball on the Easter Sunday too. It is to celebrate the hanging of Judas.
