In Feng Shui the main door is given a lot of importance as this is the ‘mouth’ of the home, where the ch’i or energy from the environment enters your home. If the door is correctly placed then the good energy or sheng ch’i will enter bringing good luck and happiness to all those who reside in it. If the door is badly placed or afflicted by bad Feng Shui then shar ch’i or the negative energy will enter the home.
The Chinese pay particular attention to the front door and will go to any lengths, including shifting it if they feel it is bringing them bad luck. A small porch or verandah creates beneficial ch’i for the front door.
To create a good luck door there are some basic guidelines in Feng shui. The door should be in proportion to the size of the house and wall. This means that if the door is too big for the area then all the beneficial ch’i will go out as quickly as it enters. On the other hand if the front door is too narrow then it won’t allow the good energies to enter your home.
Always keep the front door in good shape and repair. Avoid peeling paint, broken handles and creaking hinges. Dust and clean regularly to avoid having cobwebs and dirt on the sides of the door. The area around the front door should be well lit in both the day as well as the night.
Try to avoid very low branches of a tree or potted plants from obstructing the path near the front door. This area should receive ample natural light and sunlight during the day and a bright light switched on during the night.
The main door should always be made of solid wood. The stronger the door the better it is considered. Glass doors are not a good option in Feng Shui. The doors should always open inwards. The Chinese believe that when a door opens inwards it welcomes in the good energy Floor mats should be ideally placed outside the main door rather than inside.
Remember that if you have a good luck door then both people and positive energy will be attracted by a welcoming entrance.
