You need fibre in your diet

We all want to eat healthy diets. Healthy diets are high in fibre but low in fat. Eating food high in fibre is one of the most important and useful decisions anyone can make towards healthy living. Eating food rich in fibre and reducing fat will lead to a lot of good things like increased fitness, reduced weight and better general health.

The truth about today is that we tend to consume too much of what we should not, like sugar and salt; while we tend to eat too little of what we should be eating, like fruits, vegetables and whole grains. The result is that many of us are eating less fibre than we need. This may lead to a lot of health problems.

The labels
The one place where you can get to know the content of what you are eating is the label. All packaged foods you buy in the grocery store should have a label showing the amount of nutrients and their quantities. You find such details like fat, calories, vitamin and fibre content of the food.

Switching to high fibre foods
It is important to know that you have to switch to high fat gradually in order to prevent unpleasant side effects such as bloating, cramps and gas which may cause some abdominal pain.

Low fibre foods
There are some foods that are low in fibre. Generally these are non plant based foods. Animal based foods contain no fibre at all. That is to say meat products like poultry, beef, ham, sea food, dairy products and eggs do not contain any fibre at all. This fact should inform your choice of diet.

Fibre rich foods
Foods like grains, dried beans, legumes, dried fruits, nuts, cereals and berries contain more than six grams of fibre per serving. It is advisable to include such foods in your diet.

Cooking fibre
There are those who think that by cooking foods rich in fibre will destroy the fibre. This is not true. It is true that certain nutrients like some vitamins and minerals get destroyed when food is overcooked but this does not apply to fibre.
