Winter workout tips

March 12, 2009

It can be hard for some of us to get up and get going when it come to winter exercise. By following a few simple guidelines, you will be able to enjoy a winter workout. For those of us that enjoy working out in the crisp winter air, you will need to change your routine just a little.

It is important to be sensible about the weather. When it is below freezing temperatures or raining outside, you may want to find some indoor exercise for that day. You will also want to avoid frostbite. Another thing to consider is to dress for the weather. The right type of clothing such as polypropylene will help you to stay warm as well as dressing in layers. Hats are also important since heat rises and leaves through your head.

Your shoes should have a good tread and all weather tennis shoes are a good option. Proper footwear can help to prevent injury in bad weather, like sprained ankles and torn muscles. Pay attention to the way you breathe. Cold air can cause chest pain or even induce an asthma attack. If you find that your breathing is getting difficult or your chest starts to feel tight, it is time to go indoors.

As with any time of the year that you are working out, water is essential to your workout at all times. In order to keep from getting dehydrated, you should drink plenty of water before, during and even after your workout. Stretching before you venture out into the cold is better than stretching in the cold. You will have less of a chance of injury.

Taking a run in the crisp clean winter air can not only be fun but relaxing. You get the opportunity to enjoy different scenery and you also breathe fresh air.

By simply changing just a few things in your routine, you will not only enjoy your workout but you will also be able to prevent unnecessary injuries. Remember to pay attention to your clothing, fluids and stretching. Your workout will be great and you will feel better for it.
