Why low carb diets work

breakfastOne of today’s commonest methods of dropping excess pounds is low carb dieting. There are a lot of diets based on this principle around, which you are at a fix as to which of them is actually effective and beneficial. If you really understand the principle behind low carb dieting, you will be able to determine whether it is good for you.

How low carb diets work

It lowers water weight

Those who start low carb dieting will immediately start seeing some changes in themselves when they get on the scale. This is very exciting because they feel they have found the solution to their weight problem.

But these initial changes are a result of water being flushed out of the body. In the same way when you achieve your goal and decide to opt for a more moderate diet, you will have some water weight come back.

It gets rid of the high calorie foods

Low carb diets work because those who adopt it are able to remove certain types of high calorie foods from their diet. Some of these foods are bread, pasta, rice, bagels, and potatoes. This means they take in fewer calories.

It reduces the feeling of hunger

One more reason why people choose low carb diets is that it reduces the feeling of hunger. When there are carbohydrates in your system, they provoke a reaction from insulin, which makes you hungry. When there is less carbohydrates in your system, your insulin levels also go down.
It changes the body’s source of energy

Again, reducing the amount of carbohydrates you take in will make you enter into a state called ketosis. This is a state where the body switches from using carbohydrates as its source of energy to fat.

This incredibly reduces the feeling of hunger to a minimum level. Some people do not feel well at this stage so carbohydrates should not be totally removed from your diet.

Disadvantages

Low carb diets do have their own disadvantages. The biggest of them is a decrease in energy levels. It is not necessary to reduce your carbs intake to the level of ketosis. A carb level between 10 and 30 percent is good enough to supply you with all your calorie needs.
