What you Need to Know About a Whole Food Diet
When you first hear the phrase, whole food diet, you probably think that it’s some new fad diet. The truth is that a whole food diet isn’t a diet so much as a way of life. When a person tells you that they are on a whole food diet they’re really saying that they only eat food that is in its natural state, they don’t eat foods that have been processed or have had preservatives and sweeteners added. Most people who eat a whole food diet also try to only eat organically grown foods.
The Benefits of a Whole Food Diet
The origins of the whole food diet trace directly to yoga, Anna Yoga to be specific. The idea of a whole food diet is that a healthy, all natural diet will encourage a healthy body and peaceful mind. People who stick to a whole food diet are less likely to suffer from digestive problems such as indigestion and constipation. Some experts even claim that eating a whole food diet lessens a person’s odds of developing cancer.
In addition to eating all natural foods, a whole food diet also promotes eating a balanced diet.
Shopping for Whole Food Diet Foods
There are four basic things you have to remember when you are shopping for foods that fit into your whole food diet.
Stay away from pre-packaged food. When you are shopping you want to buy your food in bulk. When you get home you should divide the food into individual portions and make sure that it’s properly stored.
One of the reasons food producers add so many preservatives to their produce is to keep the food from spoiling while it’s being shipped to the stores. One of the best places to make sure your produce isn’t full of preservatives is to get it from a roadside stand or a farmer’s market. Only buy your produce when it’s in season.
Try to purchase your food as close to its natural state as you can find. Purchase fresh vegetables and fruits. Avoid canned or frozen food.
Talk to your local grocer and find out what kind of chemicals the farmer used when they were growing their produce. If your grocer doesn’t know what chemicals are commonly used in the area where you live, you can get the information from your counties cooperative extension office.
