What to Feed a 10-Month-Old
March 5, 2009
For the first several months of life, babies consume primarily milk and formula. However, as children grow, they need to take in additional forms of nourishment for their nutritional value. Adding foods other than milk and formula will allow the babies to continue to grow and develop. When children reach about ten months of age, it is time to reassess their diets. Keep in mind that certain foods are still restricted. Adding new foods to children’s diets will not only help them grow stronger, but it will give you an idea of what foods they like, what they don’t like and what they may unfortunately be allergic to.
Babies’ bodies need protein in their diet to grow strong. Ten-month-olds can be given small servings of fish, chicken, pork, and red meat. Limit their consumption of red meat, as it is higher in fat than the other meats and is harder to digest. Make sure to cook thoroughly all of the meat being served and to remove as much fat as possible. Cut the meat or fish into very small pieces so that the baby can easily chew the food. At ten months old, they do not have all of their teeth and rely on their gums and saliva to break down the food. Ten-month-olds can also start on dairy products such as cottage cheese, hard cheeses and yogurt.
Watch carefully as dairy products are introduced into the diet, as they will sometimes cause allergic reactions in babies. Eggs also provide a good amount of protein to babies. But remember to use only the yolk rather than the whole egg because children are susceptible to allergic reactions from the whites of the egg. Keep your baby well hydrated with baby juices, formula and water. Make sure that the juices do not contain a lot of sugar. Absolutely avoid giving your children honey until they are at least one year old because honey contains bacteria which can make a young baby ill.
You and your baby will have so much fun experimenting with new foods! And pretty soon you will both be enjoying all the different table foods that you like to cook.
