What should you cook with
December 24, 2008
You can look after what you eat. However, the best thing to do is to look after what you cook your food with so that you know what you are eating is healthy or not. Here are a few suggestions as to what alternatives you can have to the traditional methods of cooking.
Red wine vinegar
It contains flavonoids, a micronutrient effective in keeping your arteries clean. However, if used in excess, it will impart an acidic taste.
You can use it with your usual salad dressing or even as a steak marinade
Whiskey
It helps to elevate your good cholesterol levels and lowers the risk of strokes. However, cooking food with whiskey at low temperatures will oversoak it and give it an overpowering taste of whiskey.
You can add it to your barbecue sauce for extra flavour. You can put some on your steak when it is on the grill.
Soy sauce
This is cholesterol free, reduces risk of prostrate cancer, and is a flavourful substitute for salt. However, you should take care because some might be allergic to it.
You can use it will almost any meat. It goes well with chicken, beef and seafood.
Lemon juice
It is a great source of vitamin C. it helps keep bones strong and it is also an antioxidant. However, some might be allergic to lemon and besides it also has a bitter taste.
Add it to any fish and it will taste great.
Canola oil
It has 50% less saturated fat than olive oil. It has almost no flavour and so you will not get a surprise flavour when you cook in this oil. However, it is oil and so should be used in moderation.
You can use it for any stir-fry.
Margarine
It is easier to use than butter. However, it contains high levels of trans fats. Do not go overboard with it.
You can spread on your steak or mashed potatoes.
Flax seed oil
It contains omega 3 fatty acids and helps to keep your sperm healthy. However, it interferes with the absorption of supplements that you might be taking. So use it after consulting your doctor.
You can add it to your soup or make a delicious dressing with it.
Chicken broth
It has great decongestant properties. However, it is also rich in fat, so beware.
You can make some delicious stews by using it for boiling.
Aerosol cooking sprays
It is oil and it will help you convert any surface to non-stick. However, it is oil and so use sparingly.
This is a quick way to prepare eggs. It is especially great for baking because it prevents the dough from sticking.
Goose fat
It is high in vitamin B, zinc, magnesium and poly-unsaturated essential fatty acids. However, it is fat afterall.
It is good for almost anything especially poaching fish.
Beer
A small amount of beer is good because it contains polyphenol, which reduces the risk of vascular disease. However, it is high in fat content.
If you want a unique taste for your mussels, use beer. You can use pale ales because the darker kind makes the food mushy. You can use it for tenderising your meat before barbecuing.
