What Does a Carb Blocker Do
Carb blocker pills were designed and are used to help people to lose weight. The products have been designed to stop the carbohydrates that we eat from being broken down into glucose and stored in the body as fat.
Several inconclusive studies on carb blocker products showed that they did work but to what extent researchers are not sure. While a carb blocker pill may work, the results differ between the people that are using them.
The primary ingredient that is used in carb blocker products is an extract from white kidney beans called phaselous vulgaris. It can also be extracted from wheat germ.
Manufacturers of carb blocker pills claim that by taking these products, the carb blocker pills stop an enzyme called alpha amylase from converting carbohydrates found into glucose and then storing the glucose in the body as fat.
Alpha amylase is a digestive enzyme that works to break down and convert the carbohydrates into sugar and then fat. By blocking the alpha amylase enzyme, the body does not have the opportunity to retain the carbohydrates as fat.
Instead, because the enzyme is blocked from working, the carbohydrates will pass directly into the intestinal tract and are excreted from the body. These pills are said to stop as much as 45 grams of carbohydrates from being retained by the body.
Carb blocker pills first came out in the market in the 1980’s. The early carb blocker products caused users to experience uncomfortable side effects such as loose bowel movements, nausea, and gas. Plus, because the products were new, their price was very high. These reasons led for the removal of the products from the shelves of pharmacies and supermarkets.
The original carb blocker products have been revived and now do the work without the uncomfortable side effects. The prices have also become lower. An average bottle of 120 carb blocker capsules tends to cost about $20 to $25 dollars.
Recent studies on the phaselous vulgaris extract from the white kidney beans and wheat germ have proven that the carb blocker products do work in slowing down the body’s process of absorbing carbohydrates. In fact, studies show that up to 75% of the carbohydrates consumed in a meal can actually be stopped from being absorbed when a carb blocker product is taken.
