What Can Creatine Do for You

June 10, 2009

howcreatinworkCreatine is a naturally occurring substance that is produced by the body and stored as creatine phosphate. The body produces it to be used to replenish lost or used energy.

Most people naturally produce about 120 grams of creatine phosphate. Creatine can also be acquired by eating certain foods such as red meat and fatty fish.

Here is a brief explanation of how creatine works. When the body uses up energy in quick bursts, it relies on ATP (adenosine triphosphate) which is stored in the body as a quick source of energy.

As the body uses the ATP reserves, the levels of ATP are depleted and are converted into ADP (adenosine diphosphate). ADP is not an adequate energy source for the body so creatine is introduced to ADP so that it can be converted back into ATP for energy.

ATP is used up when a person performs anaerobic exercises, which are exercises that require quick and immediate bursts of energy. When the ATP is used up, the energy level diminishes.

By introducing creatine to the body, the person’s energy level jumps back up. When a person performs an anaerobic activity, his body tires rather fast. But with creatine, the body is able to endure up to 30% more of the activity without becoming completely fatigued.

Just because creatine is a natural supplement, questions have arisen about its safety.  A multitude of studies have shown that creatine supplements are a safe way to increase performance and muscle mass without experiencing any major health related side effects.

Some people who take creatine do experience some symptoms such as bloating or headaches but this can be related to dehydration.

Creatine is not meant for just men. Women can reap the benefits of creatine as well. In fact, because creatine enables the person to build muscle and gain strength, more and more women are using it since it is typically harder for a woman to build muscle.

There are four different kinds of creatine on the market so it is important to find the right one for you. Once you have found the right product, you will need to know how to take it properly.

The process of taking creatine during a four to six week period is known as loading. Creatine can be used for short term results or long term results without problems.

Creatine is also used to increase the body’s growth hormone. Creatine has also been studied for its affects on the brain and memory. Study participants that took creatine for six weeks showed an increase in working memory and intelligence.
