What Are Carotenoids – Lutein, Zeaxanthin, Lycopene, And Carotenes
August 11, 2009
Carotenoids are the latest buzz word in the scientific community. It is a nutrient that is found in our daily food and also in supplements. They provide significant health benefits. Studies have found over 600 carotenoids. They are primarily converted into Vitamin A in our body.
The most well known so far is Carotene. The other types of carotenoids that merit a look and consideration are Lycopene, Leutin and Zeaxanthin. Considering the Vitamin A connection, it is important to understand that they need to be consumed only up to the RDA.
In large quantities, they tend to be counterproductive. It may even be toxic if there is an excess build up. The body may take on a yellowish hue – this can typically be reversed as the body eliminates as a natural process and flushes the toxins out. Despite this, it pays to be careful.
Carotene itself may be studied as alpha and beta carotene. Beta carotene is found to be more likely and efficient to convert to vitamin A than alpha carotene.
This explains why beta carotene is used for studies. Studies prove that it should be derived more from diet than from supplements.
Carotenoids impart the yellow-orange colors to plants and vegetables. Carrots, papaya, pumpkin, squash are rich sources of vitamin and the carotenoids explain their bright colors. It is the carotene that gives the pigmentation to the fruits and vegetables.
Lycopene is another carotenoid that is slowly gaining more awareness. It has a host of health benefits. It is largely found in tomatoes and is known for its rich anti oxidant properties.
It increases the potential to absorb iron by the body. It helps to prevent eye and liver disease. The juices are particularly rich in these properties.
Lutein is yet again another type of carotenoid, following close on heel to Lycopene, in gaining awareness. It is known to promote eye health. It keeps the skin supple and hydrated.
It is a powerful antioxidant. It improves immunity and promotes heart health. It is particularly helpful in preventing eye diseases and is found abundantly in green leafy vegetables.
Zeaxanthin, yet another carotenoid also promote eye health. It has health benefits similar to Luetin and can be found in saffron and corn.
