There is a definite ratio to your weight, height and age. Ready charts are available to suggest how much should you weigh as per your age and height. Nevertheless, it is a very common sight to come across personalities with unduly high weight. There can be very many reasons for being overweight. But, let’s be clear that loss or gain of weight is rarely a sudden process.

Generally you gain weight over a period of time as a consequence of bad lifestyle. If ever you realize a sudden increase in your weight or you begin to lose weight continuously, don’t delay to seek medical help. Under such circumstances, as a consequence of medical treatment your weight should come back to normal. On the other hand if you continue to gain weight over the years, you have to incorporate changes in your lifestyle to attain normal weight. Such cases need a lot of will power and determination that has to be self-motivated.

There is no magic wand to bring down your weight in a few days or even weeks. If it were so, we wouldn’t see such a growing population of fat people, young adults included.

If you happen to be in the category of people who weigh more than the prescribed parameters defined by age and height, you necessarily need to change your diet coupled with exercise. Starving yourself may reduce your weight temporarily only to rebound back as you shift back to your normal diet. Neither diet nor exercise alone can get you the desired results. You have to have a proper mix of the two.

Diet control doesn’t imply that you eat insufficient food. In effect it means discarding unhealthy stuff from your diet and developing a taste for nutritious foods. The first step in that direction would be to cut down on your consumption of fats, particularly animal fats, and a slight reduction in the intake of carbohydrates.

Start taking more of vegetables and fruits. Eat white meat rather than red meat. Take low fat dairy products including milk, cheese, yogurt and buttermilk.

Some practical hints are to have soups along with or just before meals and for those in-between the meal snacks you may opt for fruits or salads.

Exercising your body is as important and helpful for weight reduction. Start with some activity that you like, be it gardening, walking or swimming and then graduate to more strenuous regular exercises.
