Ways to Rev up Your Metabolism

revmetabolisumIt is a fact that the rate of metabolism declines as age advances. It declines by about 5 % every decade starting at the age of 25. However, take heart; it is easy to get over this problem by following these simple and natural ways:

Increase muscle mass. Exercising builds muscle mass. Muscle mass in turn contributes to metabolic activity. It is believed that muscle burns by more calories than fat.

You can burn more calories with a larger muscle mass. One can build muscle mass by opting for weight training, strength training and resistance training. This goes a long way in developing muscle. Muscles are inherently denser than fat.

Avoid skipping meals: Skipping meals leads to lowering metabolism. The body then contends to overcome this by compensating. When metabolic activity decreases, the food consumed is stored as fat and not burned into energy. It is recommended to eat 6 small meals through out the day.Anything less than 1000 calories is not a good diet choice.

Activity level: Higher levels of physical activity step up metabolism. Even simple aerobic exercises such as running, jogging or walking help in this direction

Sleep/ rest: It is recommended to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep everyday for the body to recharge and rejuvenate. Avoiding this slows down metabolic rate.

Beverages: Green tea is a beverage of choice to step up metabolism. It also contains antioxidants that help prevent cancer. Alcoholic drinks are best avoided since they slow down metabolism and result in storage of fat deposits.

Dairy products, especially the low fat variety are helpful in burning fat and maintaining a healthy weight. A balanced diet is a better option than weight loss pills.

These pills often have far reaching after effects and can result in heart disease. A good fitness program accompanied by a nutritious diet is the best way to boost metabolism and lose weight.
