Water-an element in healthy weight loss

January 21, 2009

Water is absolutely necessary to survive. If you lose more than 20% of the normal water content, then you can end up dying a painful death. This is the significance of water. Water is also important for keeping a healthy weight loss and water retention in the body.

Water is an important ingredient in our body. We require water for several basic bodily functions like digestion, circulation and even for lubrication. It forms the basis of many bodily fluids like digestive juices, blood, urine, lymph and perspiration. Not only that, but it also acts as transport for several nutrients like vitamins, minerals and even carbohydrates.

Significance of water
Water is an importance and inevitable part of our body. It helps to transport nutrients like oxygen and minerals in the body by dissolving them.

Digestion, assimilation, metabolism, elimination and waste removal would not be possible without water.

Water helps to keep the toxins out of fat cells, which are otherwise stored in the fatty tissue and released in the blood stream.

It is necessary for weight loss. For burning fat, first the fat cells have to get rid of the excess water and toxins. However, if sufficient water is not provided to the body, then the fat will hold on to the water that it has and hence, no burning of fat will occur.

What will happen if you do not take enough water?
If you do not take a sufficient amount of water, then the transport of nutrients in your body will be hampered. This will result in a decrease of muscle fullness and weakness setting in.

Water also plays an important role in the elimination of toxins. Therefore, in case of less water intake, the body will start accumulating toxins like ammonia, urea, uric acid and other substances.

You can have the problem of water retention, which is called edema in medical terms. You will excrete less water and become bloated.

The most common problem that you can have related to water retention is constipation. Your stool becomes harder and hence more difficult to pass.

You can also become victim of heart or kidney diseases.

How can you overcome the problem of water retention?
You should supply an adequate amount of water to your body so that it is not forced to hold on to the fluids that it has. Your required daily amount of water is your bodyweight multiplied by 0.55. This is the amount in ounces for a woman. In case of conditions involving extreme water loss like excessive perspiration, you should drink more.

Having fiber in your diet is a good way for healthy functioning of the body
