Watching TV makes people eat more
Most people will head for the kitchen to find a snack after locating a show worth watching on TV. The TV itself actually has more to do with this phenomenon than you may initially think.
Researchers say that the more entertaining you find a program, the more likely you are to eat. This occurs because a distracted brain takes no notice of what the mouth may be doing. The distraction of a TV show means you only respond to taste, and your body won’t feel full as a result.
This can lead to unexpected weight gain. Since you don’t feel full after eating, you can continue to eat more. And if your stomach isn’t telling you that you’re hungry or full, you’ll eat even more in front of the television. Watching too much TV can even change your eating habits. If you continue to eat in front of the TV, it can lead to eating more than you normally would during mealtimes.
Junk food is the common treat to indulge in while watching TV. This is because your brain is distracted by the shows it sees, so your body craves something intense in flavor, something regular fruits or vegetables can’t compete with.
Some believe childhood obesity is caused by TV. Adults will eat during an entertaining show, but children sometimes need only see a food commercial to prompt a fridge raid.
There are ways to avoid this situation. Once you understand the effect TV has on your eating habits, think ahead. Plan on having just a few oranges, or some nuts while you watch your favorite show. Avoid the big bags of potato chips. People say TV brings the family together, but there are other activities you can do that won’t mess with your eating habits. Try a board game, or go for a family walk. Try to keep track of how much TV your child may be watching.
TV can have several harmful effects on you and your children, so be attentive. If you’re trying to lose some weight, turn off the TV and go for a walk. When you get back, drink a big glass of water. It’s better for you than chips and dip.
