Vitamin C-how it helps your skin
L-ascorbic acid, commonly known as vitamin C, is a nutrient that our body is not able to generate itself. Thus, it is necessary to eat the fruits and vegetables that are rich in vitamin C. We all know that vitamin C is good for the eyes and is used to help in the treatment of colds. But what we do not know is it is also used in the prevention and reversion of ageing skin. Studies have been conducted on vitamin C to determine its effect on the skin. However, the researches are still out to decide whether it is as benefited for the skin as shown in the studies. However, it has proved to be helpful for some people.
Vitamin C works in two ways:
1. Antioxidants: The sun’s ultraviolet rays generate oxygen free radicals that cause aging of the skin. Vitamin C acts as the first defense against these radicals cased by the sun. On the other hand, vitamin E also acts against another type of radicals like fat soluble radicals in the plasma membrane. Both vitamin A and E are used together to fight against them.
2. Collagen: The key component of most tissues is collagen. Vitamin C acts as the vital factor for the normal creation, maintenance and structure stability of collagen.
Intake of vitamin C in any form does not appear to increase its levels in your skin to any noticeable degree. It is good that you eat vitamin C rich fruits like oranges and lime, but if you have the notion that it will improve your skin, then it’s not as simple as it seems. Topical lotions and creams rich in vitamin C can still do the trick as they get absorbed in the skin. To keep vitamin C in the cream stable for it to be beneficial and absorbed in the skin is the most difficult part. This is due to the nature of the composition in vitamin C. A low pH and high concentration of vitamin C are needed in the cream for it to penetrate. However, not all vitamin C creams and lotion meet these two vital elements.
Vitamin C shows positive results as a UVA/UVB protector. It decreases skin pigmentation and increases collagen production, the factors in aging your skin. Protect your skin and use the best combination of products for your skin to fight photo damage ageing.
