Urban Running Tips Getting the Most out of Your Run
December 10, 2008
Here are some great tips for making the most of your run and keeping you safe in the city. Enjoy a good workout and have fun while you keep fit.
1. Avoid the cement and bitumen surfaces and try to run on the softer options of grass or dirt. City parks offer a good alternative to running on roads and sidewalks. The softer surfaces create less impact and put less strain on your feet and ankles. But be alert for uneven surfaces to avoid the risk of injury.
2. Run the red lights – don’t stop at red lights but jog on the spot to keep your heart rate up. Alternately, you could turn around and go back the way you came for a few yards to give the light a chance to turn green or just run around the corner.
3. Face the traffic – when you run, go against the traffic so you can see what is headed towards you. Make it easy for motorists and cyclists to see you – wear bright colors during the day and reflective gear at night or in poor visibility. Reflective strips on the backs of your shoes offer additional visibility both day and night.
4. City heat – city streets can get very hot. There is reflected heat off the cement and bitumen, streets lined with tall buildings often don’t allow cooling breezes in and car exhaust heat up the atmosphere. Consider running in a park where the grass and trees offer some protection from the summer heat.
5. Avoid congested areas. Keep clear of areas where traffic is likely to be stopped or moving slowly. There will be a concentration of exhaust fumes which you will be breathing. The best times to run are early morning or late evening when there are fewer cars on the road and the air is clear. Alternatively, hit the park and enjoy some nature while you run.
6. Night safety. Be aware of your personal safety after dark. Run with a group if possible or at least a running mate. Stay away from secluded and poorly lit areas, and be vigilant for places that people could hide unseen. Focus on your surroundings rather than listening to music or zoning out.
7. Vary your route. Keep your workout interesting and avoid boredom by varying the route you take on your regular runs. This is also a safety strategy, so that you are not developing a predictable pattern.
