Understanding the South Beach Diet
March 12, 2009
A cardiologist in Miami, Arthur Agatston, is the creator of the very popular South Beach Diet. When he created the diet, Dr. Agatston was operating on the theory that your overall health would improve if you ate carbohydrates and fats. The key was to make sure that the carbohydrates and fats were the good kind.
Years of working with patients who were recovering from heart attacks and struggling with dangerously high cholesterol provided Dr. Agatston with plenty of research material for his new diet idea. He couldn’t help but notice that most of his patients were consuming foods that were high in saturated fats.
The South Beach Diet is not for someone who is in a hurry to lose a large amount of weight in a short period of time. The South Beach Diet was designed to help a person safely reach a targeted weight.
Dr. Agatston divided his South Beach Diet into three separate parts.
The First Phase
The first phase of the South Beach Diet lasts fourteen days. The goal during this phase of the South Beach Diet is to undo what years of eating bad foods has done to your body’s reaction to insulin. In other words, you are trying to teach your body to stop resisting insulin and to start accepting that it is a good thing. The way you do this is to stop eating foods that are full of high-glycemic carbohydrates.
Instead of eating large amount of bread, cereal, cheese, and candy, you will spend the two weeks eating moderate amounts of meat, eggs, nuts, and vegetables. During this phase of the South Beach Diet, you will not be able to drink any alcohol. During the first phase of the South Beach Diet you will notice that not only are you losing weight, you are also eliminating your sugar cravings.
The Second Phase
After fourteen days, it is time to move onto the second phase of the South Beach Diet. The idea of this phase of the South Beach Diet is that you are going to concentrate on maintaining your body’s chemistry levels. During the second phase of the South Beach Diet, you can gradually start to eat whole grain breads, fruits, and a moderate amount of dairy products.
You can also start drinking an occasional glass of red wind and you can eat a small sweet potato once in awhile. The second phase of the South Beach Diet will help you reach your target weight.
The Final Phase
Once you have reached your desired weight, you will start the third phase of the South Beach Diet. During this phase of the diet you should eat three moderately portioned meals every single day. You should make sure that you eat plenty of omega-3 fatty acids, plenty of whole grain breads, and five servings of fruit every single day.
