Understanding The Atkins Diet
The Atkins Diet was a huge diet fad that came out several years ago. Did you know that the diet’s real name is ‘The Atkins Nutritional Approach’? The name insinuates that the program is not a diet but is instead a lifestyle change that people following the program need to make.
Following this nutritional plan will help dieters lose weight and keep it off. Dr. Atkins actually wrote a book about his program over thirty years ago, but it never took off until the past 15 years.
The Atkins Diet has become a way of life for so many people. It was one of the first diets to focus on carbohydrate intake. Manufacturers jumped on the success bandwagon and started creating foods that were deemed “Atkins Friendly”.
The Atkins Diet follows four individual steps that teach the dieter how to eat a balanced meal for the rest of their lives.
Step 1 – The Induction Phase
During the Induction Phase, dieters are taught to not crave carbohydrates. During this phase dieters’ bodies enter a process known as ketosis. This is when the body burns fatty acids for energy instead of using carbs and glucose for energy.
The Induction Phase lasts for two weeks. The dieter is responsible for severely cutting carbs from what they eat. It is during this phase that a person loses the most weight.
Step 2 – The Ongoing Weight Loss Phase
The length of this phase is determined by each individual. Most dieters stay in the second phase until they have lost all the weight that they wanted to. While in the Ongoing Weight Loss Phase, dieters are reintroduced to certain foods and beverages.
Step 3 – The Pre-Maintenance Phase
After a person has reached their weight loss goal in the previous phase, they reach the third phase known as the Pre-Maintenance Phase. In this phase, the dieter is allowed to experiment with food, to determine the amount of carbohydrates that their body can tolerate without gaining the weight back.
Step 4 – The Lifetime Maintenance Phase
In this last phase of the Atkins Diet, the dieter now has an understanding of how many carbs their body needs on a daily basis, and they should be able to stick to it.
By following the Atkins Diet, participants are taught how to eat in a healthy manner and in accordance with what their body really needs to function.
