Types of Fruits

fruitsThere are so many fruits in the market, some that grow naturally in our area and others that are more exotic, since they are flown in from different parts of the world. It is difficult to list all the fruits known to man, and that is not the purview of this article.

What is fruit?

Simply explained, fruit is ripened and fleshy ovaries of plants.  An interesting fact is that some fruits are known to us as vegetables, for example, the tomato and the cucumber are actually fruits.

We can broadly put all the fruit known to man into categories, to help us understand them without going into botanical technical terms.

•    Acidic Fruit – Grapefruits, oranges, limes, pineapples, tomatoes, sour plums, sour apples, and lemons are acidic fruits. These are excellent because they are efficient detoxifiers.

They should not be taken when suffering from flu as the body can overreact and aggravate the infection. Some people have experienced negative effects to these fruits, as they are highly acidic. However, the acid is healthy since it is a natural element and a high quality nutrient.

•    Semi Acidic Fruits – Strawberries, apricots, huckleberries, blueberries, nectarines, blackberries, raspberries, gooseberries , elderberries, mangos , elderberries , fresh figs, olives, persimmons, etc., are considered to be semi acidic fruit. These fruits are less acidic and therefore they are less detoxifying. These can be handled well in any amount.

•    Alkaline Fruit – Figs, peaches, apples, sweet grapes and bananas are the most popular alkaline fruit.  The rule of the thumb is that sweet fruits are alkaline in nature.  They not only prevent illnesses, but also have healing properties.

It is important to know the three categories and while shopping for fruit for your table, you should aim to get fruits from all three groups.  These three groups each have something different which gives you different nutrients and benefits.

Add all these categories to your meal intake to enjoy good health, and if fresh fruit is not available take a handful of dry fruit, which is also good for your health.
