Training When You Are Over 40

Once upon a time, you treated your body as if you did not care about it at all, doing ridiculous amounts of exercise when you wanted to and spending hours at the gym. However, times have changed and your youth has passed. You now need to care a lot about how you exercise because your body will not be able to heal as fast as it once did.

You should keep in mind a few things when you exercise at a later age.

Do not forget to warm up before you exercise.

This is very important because warming up will allow your muscles to become ready by increasing the blood circulation, improving oxygen absorption by elevating respiration and also, the viscosity in your joints will improve preventing any joint injuries.

Go easy on the exercises

You do not need to do many exercises for your muscles to develop. Muscles grow in a response action to the intensity at which they are forced to work. Therefore, if you are used to many exercises, your muscles will require even more to grow. So go easy on yourself.

Studies have shown that by performing one very high intensity exercise per muscle group, you actually achieve superior results.

Space your workouts well.

If you are exercising you know that you need to increase your intensity at each workout. With age, your body requires more time to recover. Therefore, give your body enough time to rest and recover after each workout because you will be increasing your intensity at each workout.

Space your workouts well. If your body has not recovered fully before your next workout, then it is no good doing one. This will only put you at a greater risk of injury. Take care of your body and allow enough time between workouts to recover.

Muscle means youth

You might have seen two people of the same biological age and yet look ages apart. This is because, besides the calendar, there are several biomarkers that give a much more accurate estimate of your physical age.

You wouldn’t be surprised to know that muscle is one of them. That means more muscle is more youth. Another biomarker is bone density, which can be increased by heavy, weight-bearing exercise.

Therefore, you do not need to be foolish like some youths, let the power of age show in your workouts. Be rational and perform intelligent and efficient workouts.
