Too Little Sleep May Add Some Extra Kilos

April 6, 2009

little-sleepWe burn fewer calories, when we are asleep- this is what the common notion says. However, many interprets it in wrong way and start assuming that very little sleep can help to lose more and more weight. Do you believe in the similar line? If you feel lucky to be able to manage the whole day’s stress by sleeping too little, then read this article and know the truth.

According to a study by Columbia University, very little sleep actually increases the possibility of obesity. The study has reported that the people, who could manage to get sleep four hours or less than that are more prone to obesity. The chance to become obese was 73% more in the people, who slept too little.

To reach this conclusion, the team of researchers has taken into account the data about 18, 000 people, whose age varied from 32 to 59. In their study, people’s gender, physical activity, ethnicity, age, alcohol consumption and some other factors were taken into consideration.

To make it clearer, the study report has also mentioned that people getting five hours of sleep, have 50% more likely chances to be obese. On the other hand, who could sleep for more than six hours, are 23% more likely obese.
It has been said that, as we sleep less, the level of the hormone grehlin tend to increase. With the increase in the level of the above hormone, naturally you will feel hungrier and feel to eat more and more.

Don’t deprive yourself to get minimum amount of sleep or else, you now know the consequences. Make sure to give yourself at least six hours of rest in the whole day. Many doctors advise to take eight hours of rest as well depending upon the stress level and the nature of your job.
