Toning Of Skin
The cosmetic products, which act as skin toners, are astringents, skin fresheners and simply toners. They are prepared from alcohol and water. Some of the products like glycerin, menthol, alum rose water camphor, and boric acid are also added sometimes.
In different varieties of toners, the basic difference in the formula is the concentration of alcohol present in these products. Alcohol has a very drying impact on the skin. So, the products for dry skin should not be alcohol based, whereas the products for use on oily skin is good to have a high alcohol content.
Toners are used after cleansing the skin. But sometimes they are used as interim cleansers as they can eliminate dirt and grease. Toners freshen up and tone the skin thus preparing it for application of make-up. They are helpful in maintaining the pH balance of the skin that is the optimum aciditiy and alkalinity of the skin.
The fresheners, toners and astringents appear to close pores. But actually after using these products, there is a mild irritation on the skin, resulting in the swelling of the skin and so the pores become hardly visible or less prominent.
There are some effective homemade skin toners. A natural skin toner can be prepared at home. Tomato juice is a perfect skin toner. Rose Water Toner can be prepared for normal skin by adding half a tbsp of alum to around 50gm of rose water and a 100gm of glycerin. Prepare a mixture of these collectively and keep in the fridge for frequent use.
Cucumber toner is a very revitalizing toner for normal skin. Chop some fresh cucumber and dissolve it in some yoghurt. Apply the mixture on face and leave it for 5-10 minutes, and then rinse. The leftover can be stored in the fridge for further use.
